A Blast from the Past - School in the 50s!

Updated: 5 days ago

On the 1st of October, we were having a normal school day in 4th class…. until a stranger walked in and everyone was buzzing and wondering who this man was. Our topic for the month in SESE was schools in the 1950’s/60’s. After that, we got to ask the man questions about the 1950’s/60’s in school.

At the end of the lesson, Ms. Connolly explained that this was her dad (Cmdt. Joseph Moran) and that she brought him in to meet us as part of our learning for history on the topic of ‘Schools in the Past.'

If you're wondering , here are some facts that we learned during his visit:

1.Sometimes there was a 7th grade for people that had to stay back for extra help.

2.Sometimes pupils had to bring fuel for the fireplace to help the classroom stay warm..

3.If you wanted to, you could go home for lunch but you had to be back in a half an hour.

4.Girls learned how to do darning and needle work and they would come in about twice a week, to mend  the kids' clothes or socks.

5.Students had to use ink instead of pencils.

6.They had no central heating in the classrooms except for a fire in the corner.

7.The teachers were very strict and if you were bold you would get hit with a stick or ruler.

8.In the 1950s/60s they had no uniforms.

9.Sometimes your principal could be your teacher  in some classes.

10.In the 1950s you didn't have whiteboards so you had to use chalk boards.
